Every year on June 8th, people around the world celebrate World Oceans Day.
It's a chance to appreciate the vast beauty and vital importance of the marine ecosystems that cover over 70% of our planet's surface.
But this year's observance carries far more weight and urgency than any before it.
In this episode I bring out into the open how we currently face one of the greatest threats ever to our blue planet and all its inhabitants: the climate crisis.
It is all too clear that we need a healthy ocean for a healthy climate, and vice versa.
We desperately need significantly stronger local, national, and international action from both government and corporate leaders - and we need it now.
For 2024, the theme is "Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate."
By growing this movement through transformative collaboration, we aim to create not only a healthy blue planet, but also a more just, equitable and sustainable society for all.
Together, we must persuade leaders to truly follow through on past promises with tangible steps such as:
• Rapidly deploying all available climate solutions to their full potential
• Accelerating a just transition away from fossil fuels and towards 100% clean, renewable energy
• Stopping all new oil, gas and coal extraction projects
• Quickly phasing out single-use plastics and other polluting products
• Protecting at least 30% of lands and oceans by 2030 through strongly enforced marine reserves and other conservation areas
• Collaborating with local leaders already implementing grassroots climate action in their communities
• Continuing to develop and scale new science-based solutions
The threats are dire, but there is still time to turn the tide - if we act boldly and collectively.
Over the past two decades, the World Oceans Day movement has achieved hard-fought wins like banning destructive high-seas driftnets, creating marine protected areas, and raising public awareness.
But far more transformative change is urgently needed.
On an individual level, one of the most powerful actions is to purchase eco-friendly products and push companies to offer more sustainable options.
The coatings industry, which includes paints, sealants and other vital products, has an outsized environmental impact due to ingredients like volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Fortunately, many leading manufacturers have developed extremely low-VOC and zero-VOC green coating formulas that are far less damaging.
To Sum IT Up:
If we make smart green choices as consumers and citizens - while also insisting that our leaders finally take crisis-level climate action - we can still protect and restore a healthy, resilient ocean for our own survival and that of countless species.
But we're Running out of time and chances.
World Oceans Day 2024 must be a catalyst for committed, collaborative action to secure the future we need.
