At the same time, El Niño is now 85–94% likely to be present this summer, with ECMWF and NOAA putting the odds of a strong event at 80%.

AccuWeather’s summer 2026 forecast finds that virtually no part of the contiguous United States is expected to have below-average temperatures this season.
The worst heat is projected to hammer California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. But it won’t stop there — AccuWeather is also predicting above-historical-average 90-degree days in Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia.

Climate Impact Company’s summer 2026 outlook describes what’s coming as "dangerous Northwest/West heat and dryness" with anomalous heat also hammering the Gulf States and, later in the season, extending into the Northeast.

The National Interagency Fire Center reports that no part of the United States will have below-average fire potential through August.

By the end of March 2026, over 1.6 million acres had already burned — 231% of the prior 10-year average for that point in the year.
The wildfire smoke alone will create air quality crises far from actual fire zones.

Here’s what troubles me most as someone who cares about people, not just buildings.
This summer, the combination of record heat and rising electricity prices is creating a genuine affordability crisis.
The National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA) projects that electricity bills will be 8.5% higher this summer than last, with Southern states facing even larger increases.
Residential electricity prices have risen 31.38% since 2020. Electricity consumption this summer is forecast to be higher than in any of the previous five summers.
Every year, roughly 13 million U.S. households have their power cut off for unpaid bills. This summer, that number may climb.
