CH#250 - Ventura CA Asphalt Shingle Roof

Ventura CA Asphalt Shingle Roof

The Challenge:

The 2,000 sf roof on this 1951 California bungalow already had two layers of asphalt shingles and the 10-year old top layer was curling and deteriorating.  The environmentally aware owners knew that particles washed from asphalt shingled rooftops are proven to be both a source of and a pathway for zinc and lead contaminated runoff in urban environments.  As well, they did not want to pay to remove and dispose of the two layers of shingles, contributing to the already overfull landfill, then pay for time, labor and materials to replace them.

Benefits Desired:

  • Green and Super Compliant Zero VOC Coatings
  • Cost Effective, Eco-friendly Alternative Roof for Existing Asphalt Shingles
  • Energy Star Rated Solar Reflectant
  • Minimum Disturbance to House and Occupants
  • No Generation of Waste
  • Long-Term Solution
  • 20 Year System

GLOBAL Encasement, Inc.'s Energy Star Rated solar reflective RoofCoat was chosen as a logical and simple solution.  The homeowners were able to do the work themselves.  Globe Caulk was used to fill in gaps, and the curled shingles were tacked down with galvanized roof nails, roller-applying the coatings to the recommended 20 year 32 mil Dry Film Thickness.  The homeowners paid $3,000 for materials, and figured it took them 30 hours to do the work themselves.  Their neighbors across the street told them they paid $19,000 to have their two layers of shingles removed and replaced.  The homeowners were able to save 84% over the cost of removal, disposal and replacement.
