Transite Roofing and Siding

Transite is a trade name for asbestos reinforced Portland cement sold as a pre-cast corrugated sheet. It was widely used in the United States during World War II, for both wall siding and sloped roofing applications, as a durable, fire resistant construction material. Normally not coated, it was allowed to weather naturally.

In spite of their age, much of the Transite siding and roofs are still watertight. However, as the Transite weathers and is attacked by acid rain and other environmental factors, the cement erodes away and allows asbestos fibers to be released, often creating a potential health hazard.

The necessary process of maintaining or preserving the life of Transite siding is complicated by the fact that any extensive pre-cleaning of the surfaces prior to coating could release additional asbestos into the atmosphere.

GLOBAL Encasement, Inc. manufactures an elastomeric waterproofing Encasement System designed to help prevent further degradation of the siding surface, without the need for extensive pre-cleaning.

For a 20 Year Warranty, we recommend the following application Procedures:

• HEPA vacuum and clean, as thoroughly as possible without disturbing the asbestos fibers.
• Apply One coat of GE-MPE Multi-Purpose Encapsulant at the rate of 200 SF/Gallon.
• Follow with two coats of AsbestoSafe® at the rate of 68 SF/Gln for the first coat and 80 SF/Gln for the second coat.
• To seal cracks, fasteners, and other critical areas, a high quality caulk or flashing cement such as GE-15 Acrylic Caulk should be used after the first application of AsbestoSafe®.

Install all materials in strict accordance with all published safety, weather, or applicable regulations of the manufacturer and/or local, state, or federal agencies, which have jurisdiction. Follow MSDS and Installation Instructions for AsbestoSafe® Encasement materials. Application equipment manuals should be read and followed at all times.

These minimum recommendations for material usage are for ideal conditions. The number of gallons may need to increase due to uneven application, rough surface texture, wind conditions while applying, or other variables.
